Our Story
Serving to aid and restore community members in need
S.T.A.R. (Serving to Aid and Restore) was born in March of 2015 out of a simple but powerful realization: too many of our community members were suffering from poverty and homelessness. Some were living under bridges or deep in the woods, pushed to the margins of a community that should have been their home. A small group of concerned residents refused to look away. Instead, they chose to act.
In those early days, volunteers went out into the community to meet people where they were. They sought out individuals living outdoors, attended local events focused on homelessness, and organized collections of clothing and supplies to help meet immediate needs. What began as a grassroots effort quickly grew into a movement rooted in compassion, dignity, and human connection.
By June 2015, Rosemont Lutheran Church on West Broad Street opened its doors and offered S.T.A.R. a gathering space and storage. With a home base, the organization began to take shape. Clothing racks were set up. Food shelves were stocked. Tables and chairs welcomed community members in for coffee, conversation, and a moment of rest. It became a place not only to receive essentials, but to be seen, respected, and cared for.
In 2017, S.T.A.R. moved to its current home at Christ Church UCC at the corner of East Market and Center Streets in downtown Bethlehem. There, the organization has continued to grow – along with a dedicated and compassionate volunteer community. Since early 2024, these volunteers have greatly expanded S.T.A.R.’s fundraising efforts, added new storage shelves and opened a service desk to assist people with specific material needs. Today, S.T.A.R. supports more than 100 community members every Saturday, providing essential resources and a welcoming space where everyone belongs.
As S.T.A.R. looks to the future, our commitment remains the same – to deepen our outreach, strengthen partnerships with other service organizations, and continue building a more caring, connected, and resilient community for all.
